Embrace Your Heart – Embrace Your Brain

Embrace Your Heart – Embrace Your Brain

Here’s yet another reason to “know your numbers!” Recently the Center for Disease Control and the American Heart Association reported evidence of a strong link between the risk factors for heart disease and dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

We all know we should have our blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar tested. We all should maintain a healthy body weight and eat foods low in fat and high in fiber. But most of us don’t.

Yet, people in their 40’s and 50’s have the opportunity to impact not only their heart health but also prevent or delay developing dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Younger people have an even better opportunity. People in their 60’s can significantly delay the onset of symptoms. Even those who are already experiencing cognitive decline can receive some relief and even delay more problems by treating heart disease related conditions.

Here are some tips to take charge of your health and start creating a brighter future today:

Make an appointment to discuss your risk factors with your doctor. Controlling your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar will reduce your risk of heart attack, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease as well as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Move more. Be more active in your daily life. Walk the dog, do chores around the house, turn on an exercise program or video. Being active doesn’t have to mean a trip to the gym. Using tools like a pedometer and taking 10,000 steps during your day can help to increase your activity level, make you feel better and help keep your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar in line.

Make good choices at meal time. At breakfast include some good quality fiber like oatmeal or whole grain bread. At lunch avoid trans-fats in fried and prepackaged items and choose a plate filled with color. Having a salad, soup or stir fry is a much better choice than the burger and fries. At dinner limit your serving of meat to the side of a deck of cards and fill the rest of your plate (and belly) with whole grain rice or pasta, vegetables and fruits.

Take a break. One of the leading risk factors for all disease is stress, and it is often the most difficult to control. Each day take a moment to sit quietly, breath in and out and remind yourself of the good things in your life. Focusing on the people you love, the things that make you laugh and the smiles you share can brighten your day and lighten the load.

Avoid smoke. Smoking is the number one cause of preventable death. If you smoke the best thing you can do for your future is to quit. Living or working with a smoker and breathing in their smoke doubles your risk of developing heart disease, cancer and a host of other ailments.

Don’t try to do everything at once. Pick just one thing to do today for your health. By focusing on the good choices you make and not beating yourself up when you slip, you will build your own health lifestyle.

The "Three P" Method of Entertainment

The "Three P" Method of Entertainment

For a friend's 40th birthday his wife threw the Bash of a lifetime. Eddie has been a KISS fan since he was knee high to a grasshopper. His loving spouse found a KISS tribute band and booked them to play the common space on the first floor of the beach-side condo they share. The space was two enormous rooms, and in one the band set up, and in the other was a cornucopia of food offerings.

I arrived early to help her set up the room. Every kind of KISS paraphernalia from concert one-sheets to dolls and limited collectors items filled every possible space. As we worked to ready the one room the band worked in the other to ready their equipment. They checked their play list, went over sound checks, and played several songs. From the other room they sounded awesome. I went over to watch and saw the band in ordinary street clothes working through their sound check. They were thorough, though, and took great effort to make certain nothing was left to chance on the technical side of things.

That night when Storme went upstairs to get Eddie (under the guise of going to a wedding), the tribute band finished last looks before making their appearance.

Eddie appeared to thunderous applause with a very surprised look on his face. As soon as the camera flashes subsided the band appeared. Already surprised by the party he was completely floored by the band.

We all were. Myself especially. The transformation was incredible. These guys looked like KISS. They sounded like KISS. They had the mannerisms and affectations down. We were watching Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss make their magic.

Between their two sets they made themselves available for photographs, autographs, and being present to add to an already electric atmosphere. Gene Simmons stepped outside to do some fire eating which had people eating out of his hands. And after their break they played their second set.

The band is called DESTROYER. I believe they are based out of South Florida and they are absolutely dynamite all the way around.

The reason I mention this experience is they epitomized certain critical aspects of entertainment, aspects that are easily transferred to almost any other business model in the world.

Their focus on Preparation, Presentation, and Professionalism showed a consummate sense of effort to their final product.

Preparation: they came in with their equipment and went to work immediately on identifying the show / concert space and the logistics of their performance. They set up their equipment and made several adjustments as they worked alongside their technical crew. They checked their instruments and gear, speakers and mics and made sure there were no surprises. They played several songs to make sure sounds were crisp and feedback issues would be minimized.

Presentation: They made their appearance striding into the room as if they owned the place. They picked up their guitars and drumsticks and began to play. And they had everyone entranced. Eddie's mouth was open for the first ten minutes as he watched like a kid locked inside a candy store with his favorite chocolate. The band members acknowledged Eddie several times, and got the audience involved as well. They had taken great care in their costumes, make-up, and musical ability to present something that was a turn-key package. Each member of the band had taken the time to study and understand the person whose work they were recreating. It was truly a visual feast.

Professionalism: The members of the band behaved like veteran performers who understood their obligations to themselves and others. Like a well-oiled machine, they knew what needed to happen, and when it needed to happen. Their timing was impeccable. They were KISS, and left little doubt to the others who gathered to watch.

The lessons here are simple:

Whether one is preparing for an audition, a table read, or the first day on a set, whether a supernumerary or a principal player, the necessary demands on self should be the same. Be prepared, be ready to present what you are arriving to present, do your research, and be totally professional with your finished product.

These apply to anyone, anywhere. These can be applied to our personal as well as professional lives. It requires time and effort, but the end result is worth it when we realize our goals.

It's simple: We stand to benefit greatly when we are willing to give more than those around us expect. Do the absolute best. Be willing to listen and learn. This applies across the board and is good to remember as we find our way down life's river and encounter others doing the same.

3 Tips to Creating a Free Gift Your Ideal Clients Actually Want

3 Tips to Creating a Free Gift Your Ideal Clients Actually Want

If you're like many entrepreneurs, concern (or even distress) about the size of your email list is a major issue. And for good reason.

Your email list – which is a list of folks that have given you permission to email or otherwise contact them – is the foundation of business success. Those are the people who are interested in building a relationship with you and eventually may turn into a customer of yours. The more people on that list, the easier it is to build a profitable, sustainable business.

So how DO you grow that list? Well, one tried-and-true strategy is to come up with a free gift or "taste" of your offer in exchange for getting your ideal client's contact information. (An example of this is a special report or a video or audio recording and you set up an opt-in page to collect the name and email address in exchange for giving them access to that content.)

The problem is, how do you figure out what the best gift should be? Below are 3 tips to help you do exactly that:

1. Create your gift around what's keeping your ideal client's up at night. No matter what it is you sell, there's one major problem keeping your ideal client's up at night that your products or services would solve. That's what you want to focus on – what I call the "gateway" problem.

This is important to remember – while I know some of you reading this offer very complicated and thorough coaching or healing programs that end solving lots of issues your ideal clients have, they did not actually buy the your program because of ALL those results. They bought it because of ONE major issue they were having, and now that your program solved other problems, they're really excited about it but that's not what caused them to buy your program in the first place.

If you try and get too cute or complicated in your initial gift, your ideal clients are not going to be that interested in giving you their name and email for the gift (much less actually going through what you put together).

2. Spend some time crafting a hooky title for your gift. The title is what is going to catch their eye and encourage them to read more about what you're offering for free.

So how do you create a hooky title? Go back to what's keeping your ideal clients up at night. For instance, you're a weight-loss coach, you could focus on 5 foods that make you fat. Or if you're a business coach you could focus on 5 mindset traps keeping you from building a successful business.

Now, what's keeping your ideal clients up at night is only the first step. As you can see by my examples there are a couple of other tips to help you craft a hooky title:

* Putting a number in there. It helps to have X tips or steps or secrets or strategies. Adding that detail makes it more specific for your ideal clients plus it implies you've laid out the information in a way that makes sense for them to consume.

* The smaller the slice, the better. Notice I focus on 5 foods that make you fat or 5 mindset traps. Not EVERYTHING that is making you fat or EVERYTHING that is keeping you from growing a business. One piece of the puzzle. Again, that specificity makes it very clear exactly what your ideal clients are getting, and the more clear they are, the more likely it is they'll want it (if it appeals to them).

3. Do not be afraid to make it content-rich – but do not give away the store. Okay, so how on earth can you do that?

The best way to do this is to completely answer whatever you promised them you would answer, but your answer should open up another question. So, for the mindset traps, you tell them exactly what the mindset traps are, but if they want more personalized help to avoid them, they'll need your product. Or you share what the 5 foods are, but then you may need something to replace those foods (or maybe eliminating those foods is not enough and they'll need more help) and that's where your program comes in.

The problem I've seen with content sharing is either people clearly hold back information so it's obviously incomplete (which irritates your ideal clients) or they share too much information and their ideal clients end up feeling satisfied and have no need to take the next step (EVEN if it's a false sense of satisfaction).

Again, this can be helped if you narrow down what your gift is covering to a very small piece of the puzzle. If you do that, you (hopefully) will not share so much your ideal clients feel complete, and if you answer that small piece completely, they'll feel like you gave them a great deal of content.

Paint Color Ideas For A Living Room

Paint Color Ideas For A Living Room

The single choice of paint color will change the entire atmosphere of your living room. To find the perfect color for your home, start by deciding what you want the room to feel like.

Making the choice of what color to paint your living room can be difficult because of the myriad of colors available at every paint store. Don’t start out trying to pick the right color and the exact shade. Break down the decision process and begin by looking at the big picture. Try to decide what you want the room to feel like. If you want the room to be peaceful and relaxing, think of light, natural colors, such as soft whites, creams, beiges, sage greens and other earth tones that give you a soothing feeling. If you want a cheery room, pick cheery colors, such as bright white, yellow, warm pink or any color that feels sunshiny and happy. For an invigorating, classy room, choose warm, dark colors, from burnt orange to eggplant to chocolate. To make your living room cool and posh, pick stark black, white and cool blues.

No matter how light or dark or rich colors are, about half of them are warm and the other half are cool. You’ll be able to tell pretty easily which category each color falls into, but don’t get distracted from the way it will make the room feel by how pretty they are. Cool colors will give your living room a more impersonal, peaceful feel, while warm ones create an atmosphere of warmth, hospitality and excitement. Cool colors often coordinate with blue, and include pure white, black, gray, blue, all shades of purple, pink, and pastels. Warm colors have a closer relationship with gold, such as cream, brown, golden yellows, orange, orangey reds, and most greens.

One of the unique and often unnoticed qualities of color is that it can psychologically change the size of the room. Light colors make rooms feel bigger. This is why ceilings are often painted white, making them feel higher. Dark colors draw the walls of a room together, so people rarely paint rooms in very dark shades. If your living room is small, go with lighter shades. On the other hand, if you have a large living room, especially if it feels too big, a darker color can make it feel more homey and intimate.

No matter what shade of color you choose, the way to make it work is to put your efforts into creating balance. Unless you’re going for a monochromatic look, pick a wall color that contrasts with your furniture and decor. Balance is very important with dark paint colors. When a room has lots of windows, wide trim and light colored furniture, a dark color can be the best idea possible.

Don’t be afraid to pick a wild color. Take into consideration the way color affects the mental size of the room, get advice from friends and decorators and go with it! Keep a balance between bright or dark colors with light furniture and trim. Choose the atmosphere of the room first and select a color that achieves that atmosphere. You’ll make your living room a decorating success!

All About Fiber Optic Cable Cleaning

All About Fiber Optic Cable Cleaning

To get rid of contaminants and keep your optic cable functioning optimally you have to clean it regularly.

Tools you need for cleaning

There are many types of tools you need when cleaning the cables. Some of these things include:

Compressed air: Clean dry air is necessary to ensure that the aerosol is free or water, dust, and oil. For ideal results, you should use filtered or canned compressed air. You can easily find the air in your local laboratory supplier or photoshop.

Lens paper: The lens paper is made up of a long fiber that doesn’t have any chemicals. The paper is ideal when you are looking to minimize particulates. You can easily find the lens paper from your local drug store, laboratory supplier, or camera shop.

Methanol: You are discouraged from cleaning the optic cables using chemicals but if you have to, you should go ahead and do it but you should follow the guidelines given by your manufacturer. Just like the other cleaning materials, you can easily find methanol from your local camera shop, pharmacy, or drugstore.

Fiber optic cleaning notes

For ideal results when cleaning the unit you need to observe a number of notes. When cleaning, you should ensure that the fiber optic cable doesn’t come into contact with any surface, including your fingers. You should also avoid bending the cable. This is to avoid breaking the cable which would result in poor performance.

It’s common for optics and optic coating to be easily chipped. To prevent the chips from getting onto your hands you should use finger cots or powder free surgical gloves. To avoid contamination you should only use fresh spectroscopic grade methanol. Before you start the cleaning process, always ensure that the module power is off and the light sources are disabled.

Fiber optic cable cleaning procedure

To achieve ideal results, you should follow a cleaning procedure. You should start with blowing the surface of the fiber optic cable with a stream of clean dry air. This is to dislodge any large, loose particles. You should then place 1-3 drops of methanol at the center of the lens tissue and use it to clean the optical surface. Once you are done examine the optic fiber under high-intensity light using a magnifier. If there are still some contaminants on the surface you should repeat the cleaning process. If clean, immediately install a protective cover.
